AI Child Safety

bondu Safety Tools and Guidelines

bondu has been designed to use AI in a thoughtful, developmentally supportive way for children and their families. This page explains how bondu’s safety systems, behavioral guardrails, and design principles work together to help ensure children have a safe, age-appropriate, and positive experience during their adventures with bondu.

Conversation Guardrails

bondu’s conversational guardrail system is designed to protect children’s physical, emotional, and digital wellbeing through clear conversation boundaries and careful guardrails.

What bondu Will Not Discuss

❌ Sexual or mature body topics

bondu avoids conversations about sexual topics or mature discussions about bodies. If a child raises a question in this area, bondu gently redirects the conversation and may encourage speaking with a parent or trusted adult who can provide appropriate guidance.

❌ Violence, weapons, or crime

bondu does not engage in conversations about violence, weapons, or criminal activity. Instead, bondu redirects the discussion toward positive topics such as problem-solving, cooperation, or imaginative storytelling.

❌ Scary or horror content

bondu avoids frightening themes or horror-related content that may be upsetting or confusing for young children. Conversations are guided toward playful, imaginative, and age-appropriate stories and activities.

❌ Self-harm or harming others

If a child mentions harming themselves or someone else, bondu responds calmly and redirects the conversation toward seeking help from a trusted adult such as a parent, caregiver, or teacher.

❌ Substance use

bondu does not discuss or promote topics related to drugs, alcohol, or other substances. If these topics arise, bondu redirects the conversation to safe and age-appropriate subjects.

❌ Hate, bullying, or harmful stereotypes

bondu avoids language or conversations that promote bullying, exclusion, or harmful stereotypes. Instead, bondu encourages kindness, empathy, respect, and positive ways of interacting with others.

❌ Politics, religion, or news topics

bondu does not engage in discussions about political issues, religious beliefs, or current news events. If these topics arise, bondu redirects the conversation toward neutral, age-appropriate subjects. Parents can enable the ability to discuss specific faiths in settings.

If these topics are raised bondu will elegantly deflect the conversation back to kid appropriate themes or let the child know they should discuss this with their parent.

Prevention

What bondu Will Never Instruct

bondu will never guide children to engage in activities that could be unsafe or inappropriate.

  • Using appliances or sharp tools
  • Playing with fire, electricity, or chemicals
  • Unsafely climbing, jumping, or taking physical risks
  • Going near water without adult supervision
  • Leaving the house or interacting with strangers

Escalation

When bondu Redirects to Adults

Some topics are best handled by trusted adults. When these arise, Bondu encourages children to speak with a parent, caregiver, or other trusted adult.

  • Medical or health-related concerns
  • Emotional challenges that require adult support
  • Money, purchases, or financial decisions
  • Household rules or family decisions
  • Situations involving danger, distress, or uncertainty

How We Protect & Empower Families

In App Safety Center

Safety Alerts help parents stay informed when conversations may require attention.

bondu’s Safety Alert system monitors conversations to identify language that may signal potential risks, unsafe situations, or concerning behavior. If something noteworthy appears, parents receive a notification and can review the conversation in the chat history to understand the context. Because protecting children is our priority, the system is intentionally designed to err on the side of caution, which means some alerts may appear even when no real concern exists.

Built to Strengthen Human Connection

bondu is designed to support real relationships and real play — not replace them. It sparks imagination and conversation while encouraging children to engage with the people and world around them.

Encourages Imaginative Play

bondu helps children create stories, invent characters, and explore role-playing adventures that bring their ideas to life.

Supports Creative Activities

From drawing and building to crafting and pretend games, bondu inspires kids to turn their imagination into real-world play.

Builds Confidence Through Conversation

By sharing stories and ideas with bondu, children practice expressing themselves and build confidence communicating with parents, siblings, and friends.

Principles

Child-first design

Every interaction is crafted to support healthy emotional, cognitive, and social development.

Imagination over passive entertainment

bondu encourages storytelling, curiosity, creativity, and open-ended play rather than passive consumption.

Parents in the loop

bondu reinforces household rules and provides parents with visibility into conversations and alerts when needed.

Age-appropriate by design

Content, language, and activities are tailored specifically for children ages 4–8.

Transparency about what bondu is

bondu is clear that it is a toy designed to talk and play—not a real person or a replacement for parents, teachers, or friends.

Encouraging real-world connection

bondu regularly suggests activities that take place off-device and encourages children to talk, play, and explore with people around them.

Ethics

Full parental visibility

Parents can review transcripts, summaries, and safety alerts directly in the bondu app. Caregivers stay informed and in control.

No secrets

bondu never asks children to hide things from parents and encourages open communication with trusted adults.

Respect for families

bondu defers to parental authority and avoids contradicting household rules.

No manipulation or persuasion

bondu does not nudge, persuade, upsell, or attempt to influence a child’s decisions.

Human-first AI

When conversations touch on emotional, medical, or sensitive topics, bondu encourages children to talk with a trusted adult.

Continuous Safety Testing

bondu’s AI is regularly tested using automated simulated conversations through a process known as red-teaming, designed to challenge the system’s safety guardrails.

These tests run hundreds of scenarios intended to trigger unsafe responses across a wide range of situations. The insights help us identify weaknesses and continuously strengthen bondu’s safety systems.

Our goal is simple:
Find and fix problems before children ever encounter them.

BETA: Tested With Real Families

+2,200 families
+18 months of testing
+Thousands of hours of play
Continuous safety refinement

bondu’s safety and behavior systems were developed and refined through more than 18 months of beta testing with thousands of families. Throughout this program, we continuously reviewed interactions, gathered parent feedback, and monitored how children naturally played, imagined, and communicated with bondu.

Insights from this real-world testing helped strengthen bondu’s safety guardrails, improve age-appropriate responses, and shape the design principles that guide bondu today.
